Manchester United is set to make Barca midfielder the club’s highest earner
According to The Daily Star which was reported by Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United is determined to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona this summer transfer window. United’s new coach, Erik ten Hag, has named his compatriot as his top priority.
Ten Hag worked with De Jong at Ajax and intends to persuade him to join Manchester United with a lucrative contract offer. United is expected to offer him a weekly salary of £395,000, which would be higher than that of David de Gea, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo. This equates to a yearly compensation of €24 million.
If De Jong leaves Barcelona, he is expected to seek a club that can offer him Champions League football, which United cannot now provide. They finished sixth in the Premier League this season, narrowly missing out on a place in the Europa League — two points ahead of West Ham United and a place in the Europa Conference League.
