Celta Vigo striker Santi Mina has been sentenced to four years in prison for a sexual abuse incident that occurred in Almeria in 2017.

Celta confirmed in a statement that the 26-year-old will be “temporarily” removed from the club’s training fields after numerous outlets in Spain broke the news on Wednesday morning.

Mina was judged not guilty of sexual assault but found guilty of sexual abuse. He must pay the victim €50,000 in damages, and a restraining order has been imposed against him, mandating him to maintain a 500-meter distance from the victim for the next 12 years.

The player’s defense will appeal the sentence.

David Goldar, a former Celta player who now plays for UD Ibiza, was also charged with sexual assault but found not guilty.

If Mina’s appeal is denied, he will be sentenced to prison because his term is more than 24 months.
