The signing of a new holding midfielder is one of Barcelona’s top targets in the summer transfer window.

With Sergio Busquets’ contract expiring in 2023, the club is searching for someone who can step in as a backup before eventually taking over as the first-choice number six.

Barcelona has been connected with a bid for Ruben Neves, but Diario SPORT reports that they are also monitoring Danilo and have approached Palmeiras about signing him.

The 21-year-old, who is currently playing for Palmeiras, is one of the most exciting possibilities in South American football, having risen to prominence quickly in recent years.

His achievements in Brazil’s top division and the Copa Libertadores have been outstanding, and many anticipate him to move to Europe shortly.

This is when Barcelona enters the picture. The Catalans have shown a strong interest in the teenager and have emerged as the clear favourites to recruit him this summer.

Danilo is expected to cost between €20 and €25 million. Unlike Ruben Neves, who was regarded a direct competition for Busquets, the club is eyeing him as a deputy for the veteran.

Danilo wants to join Barca because he wants to be a part of Xavi’s system. If he does join Barcelona, he will serve as a backup to Sergio Busquets next season.

He’ll spend his first year learning Xavi’s tactics before being groomed into a regular first-team player for the Spanish giants.

The Brazilian might be a fantastic cost-effective replacement for Neves for a charge of €20-25 million. However, considering his lack of European experience, Barcelona’s pursuit of the teenager is fraught with danger.

It’s anyone’s guess if Danilo will be able to overcome that hurdle and live up to his expectations at Camp Nou.
