Another Premier League team could be sanctioned by the UK government
As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Chelsea may not be the only team sanctioned by the UK government.
Due to a meeting between Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the club is now in the spotlight.
According to the BBC, the UK government has slammed City owner Mansour for meeting with Putin ally Assad recently.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warned the Athletic that “in the absence of a shift in behavior by the Syrian regime,” expanding links “undermines the prospect of a lasting and inclusive settlement in Syria.”
City might follow Chelsea’s lead at a time when political tensions are causing problems in the Premier League.
The government has placed a freeze on the assets of Blues owner Roman Abramovich, preventing the club from being sold or transferred.
