Accra Hearts of Oak defeat JS Saoura in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup
The Rainbow Club started the game very well, having came all out at their Algerian counterparts but nearly gifted a goal in the opening minutes of the game.
The ‘Phobians’ with an early goal scoring opportunity after Daniel Afriyie was played through, he cuts back nicely and laid a pass to Ibrahim Salifu who had his shot saved but Kofi Kordzi’s rebound went wide for goalkick.
JS Saoura also with their first dangerous incursions after six minutes, a cross was sent into the box to locate Mohammed Dawood but was cleared timely by James Sewornu.
And finally Hearts of Oak broke the deadlock on the 16th minute. Daniel Afriyie once again was found with a sumptuous pass, who turns and sent in a cross which was met with a towering header from Ibrahim Salifu to get them opener.
The Eagles with a quick response after going down. They were awarded a free kick on the right flanks but resulted in a wasted effort for a defending throw.
Fatawu Mohammed back pass to locate Mohammed Alhassan nearly caused a blunder after rather falling on an opposition player but his short went straight at goalkeeper Richard Attah.
Even exchanges from the two sides in the last five but all yielded nothing bringing the first half to an end.
Back from the break, Hearts of Oak were dealt with a blow after Ibrahim Salifu suffered an early injury and left the pitch. His position was taken by Isaac Agyenim Boateng
The Eagles with an early incursion after Hamidi cuts in sumptously from the left but his curler missed the post by miles for a restart.
The ‘Phobians’ nearly doubled their lead on the 55th minute after lovely combination between Botchway and Isaac Mensah to send in a decent cross but Afriyie Barnieh had his header missed the post by inches.
Afriyie Barnieh wins Hearts of Oak a free kick. Kofi Kordzi stepped up with a fine delivery but was stopped by goalkeeper Zakari Saidi.
The home team with yet another opportunity after a long ball landed on Barnieh who turns and sets up Isaac Mensah in the box but fired side netting for goalkick.
Hearts of Oak finally doubled their lead on the 72nd minute with a well worked team goal. Ansah Botchway played Denkyi through on the left flanks whose cross was connected into the buttom right corner calmly by Isaac Agyenim Boateng.
JS Saoura goalkeeper Zakari Saidi was handed a second yellow card after a foul on Daniel Afriyie outside the box. His place was taken by Aymen Mouyet.
It finished 2-0 in favour of Hearts of Oak. They travel to Bechar for the return encounter next week.
